Sony Ericsson P990i: Elegant and powerful

Sony Ericsson finishes announcing the P990i officially (the P990c is equal but with Chinese language in its configuration) the new version of its Smartphone that as newness includes the OS Symbian 9.1

P990i takes again form Factor of its predecessors with his touch screen 262.000 colors QVGA 2,8 inches and its keyboard inside the flip. This full keyboard contains all the letters of the alphabet as well as the figures, symbols and the bar of space.

Display is of 240×320 pixels, touchscreen and of 262.000 colors; the internal memory is of 80Mb, and the MemoryStick cards that accept are those of until 2Gb, to level email accepts all the protocols (until the one of the Blackberry), talktime is in UMTS of up to 3 hours and GSM until 9 hours.

And, sincerely I do not see smartphone with characteristics similar to this, nor Nokia serious that are top of 9000 Symbian… and the rest. better we do not compare, poor the Treo Windows.

The specifications are really impressive, is a terminal GSM 900/1800/1900, with connectivity UMTS, Bluetooth, USB, RS232, port infrared and WIFI (WLAN 802.11b), the camera of photos is of 2 megapixels and has supported for Memory Stick Pro and PAIR…

The design is really pretty, improved enough with respect to the P910 and, mainly have added him many functions, for example reader of RSS built-in (or I imagine bursting the memory with feeds), capture of video, a version Lite de Flash, SVG tiny, auto focus.

“Flight” includes the way in where all transmission is cut, to be able to be used in airplanes (and the new fashion is that in the casinos also they are being prohibited) but it allows that the tuner of FM including continues working, the detail that I do not see in the official specifications is the MP3 reproduction, but can be that it is made via soft and that, of factory, comes totally prepared for a corporative market.

The smartphone is from now on compatible UMTS/3G. It is able to be connected to Wi-fi (802.11b) without forgetting connections via Bluetooth and infra-red. P990i integrates a camera 2 Megapixels (resolution equivalent to K750i and W800i) with the function autofocus as well as a tuner FM/RDS.

Side report, P990i has an internal storage of 80 Mo and will be compatible with the memory boards Memory Stick Pro DUET. A memory board of 64 Mo will be delivered in the pack. In addition, Sony Ericsson announces that Memory Stick DUET Pro of 4 Go will be available during the launching of P990i, at the beginning of 2006.

Software side, P990i is the first smartphone embarking Symbian OS 9.1 as well as interface UIQ 3.0. With his solution of Push Email the user can reach everywhere and constantly his emails and their enclosures. The smartphone also integrates the navigator Opera 8, a support Java and Java 3D and many other applications of the office automation type.

It is a rich tiny beast.

Smaller than Treo 650

Narrower and fatter than Nokia E61

For my hand he is not great.

Good screen (same resolution QVGA that Nokia E61, less than lso 320x320 of the greater Treo but, and in vertical format).

Windows XP requires a called utility to install things in Mac OS X, and note so that. The process is not difficult but he is pajero (I have watched like five or six barritas of progress to fill). The important thing is that it is going to be with the last Firmware that causes that it behaves well.

By all means, it says that the installation failed horribly, and when reconectar it, it says that it is up-to-date.

After that…. it never walked more.

When catching it a luck of brightness like of caught activates screen but happening only black, and zero functionality.

By all means, firmware cannot be reinstalar because it says to be up-to-date.

In summary, a very rich telephone, but totally inusable.

A first bad experience with the M600i and now a P990i that is incapable to update operating system.
